The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Screenplay

This is, of course, not the actual screenplay that Karey Kirkpatrick is writing. This is something I did on my own when I really had nothing better to do with my time. I made a few adjustments to the dialogue, but it is still all Douglas Adams.

The opening scene comes from Adams' short story "The Private Life of Genghis Khan". After reading it, I realized it would lead into Mr. Prosser perfectly. It is as though Adams intended it to be an opener for Hitchhiker's; which, of course, may be the case. I've never laid eyes on the script that Adams did work on, so I have no idea what sort of things Kirkpatrick is doing with it. Hopefully, we will someday find that out.

The biggest problem most people have encountered, from what I understand, is how to put the hilarious descriptions from the original book into the screenplay. However, I decided to solve it by ignoring that this is a concern. The dialogue was funny enough in and of itself, so I decided it would do nicely all on its own. Plus, it saved me to problems of creating possibly jarring film constructs to make them work, and, moreso, it saved me a lot of agonizing decisions when it came time to cut things down to a reasonable length. Film is not print. Things work differently in those two mediums.

I did this for the heck of it, and I'm happen enough with how it turned out. It proved to be a very entertaining exercise and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

I now have it in HTML format. What can I say, I was bored.
