Valkyries

"Choosers of the Slain". Valkyries are mounted upon winged horses and they are armed with helmets and spears. The Valkyries scout the battlefields to choose the bravest of those who have been slain. They escort these heroes, called the Einherjar to Valhalla, Odin's hall.

Valkyries are variously described as both beautiful young women and repugnant old hags. In this tale, they beautiful young women normally, but repugnant, frightening hags while flying through battles.
